previous - "The Beautiful People" - next I'm starting to like these numbered list things at
the weekend, as (esp. on Saturday) it allows me to blurp about various
shenanigans and perusals from the working week, when I lack a coherant
narrative.
1. Day didn't start in quite the fashion I
wanted it to, in that I was later than I'd intended in getting up, and
also it had gone noon before I left the house for my (intendedly
'morning') shopping trip.
2. The trip was OK in the end - sunny weather
and not too many freaks in town. I got a few pressies for my
nieces, didn't gun people down in Tesco in protest against the length
of the queues, and was home by two, to have a nice late lunch.
3. Didn't do much for the rest of the day -
playin' snooker on my xbox, playing a little music (am liking Rosie
Thomas at the moment), listenin' to 5Live and watching TV.
4. I should have drank more coffee, all the
same. I developed quite a headache by mid evening, and had to resort to
making myself a two-spooner.
5. Workwise I had a bit of a cunty last few
minutes of the working week, despite overall the week having been OK
(except, perhaps, for my rather crude 'being nothing but civil but not
actually being anywhere near friendly' attitude I seem to be adopting
with JR, derived more from lack of social grace/ability than from
disliking her or owt).
6. Firstly, I tried to e-mail myself some work
home to finish this weekend, but it seems to have not worked at all -
hence I'll have to do it early Monday morning. Secondly I've been given
another massive fuckoff trial to do at sort notice, and I resent the
fact one of my bosses mailed me this at ten to five on a Friday
evening, esp. 'cause she'd been sitting on it and not doing owt about
it for many months.
7. Watched 'Free Agents' the other night, and
it's quite good. I think part of it's appeal is the fact it has
similarities with, but is also very different to, 'Not Going Out' -
which is scheduled the same evening. Sharon Horgan is good though, even
if I didn't know she was Shane (Irish Rugby player) Horgan's sister.
8. On the walk home from shopping today, a bloke
at the crossing paced off as fast as he could, seeming to gain pleasure
from accelerating faster than I could manage. He was one of those
little blokes with Napoleon complex. Anyhow, I had the wonderful
thought of "yes, you can walk faster than me, but that is because I am
weighed down with four bags of shopping, but all that is weighing you
down is your inflated sense of self importance!".
9. Gash! Despite Wigan having to resort to
playing a few second string players, Boro' still only managed a 0-0
draw against Wigan. They're losing touch with the teams just above them
(Pompey and Stoke drew 2-2, Newcastle and WBA both don't play till
tomorrow, and Spurs play Hull on Monday). Man United's 2-1 win against
Blackburn gave me mixed feelings, annoying that Alex's men look like
they're strolling to the title, but at least Blackburn are still down
there struggling with Boro'.
10. You know t'other day I asked y'all to name
pairs of footballers who'd reresented their country at international
level, and whose names were transpositions of the 1st and 2nd names of
each other? Anyhow, if you'd been awaiting the results, the two pairs I
could think of were John Collins (Scotland) & Collins John
(Netherlands), and Leighton James (Wales) & James [Jim] Leighton
(Scotland). Mmm OK?
11. I've never woken up bound face-to-face (like
a mummy) to Sue Barker inside a ten-metre length of yellow corregated
1.5m diameter construction tubing.
12. Something that janeygodley
said about the Jade Goody thing was pretty much in agreement with my
sentiments. I've very little opinion of Jade Goody as a person (she
seems a bit unintelligent, had made a load of crappy decisions, but
given her background and how she came over as a decent lass on an
episode of 'Friday Night Project' once, fair play to her) hence it's
not like I ever really hated her or like I suddenly think she's a
martyr or the people's princess or 'owt..
13. ..thing is, all the media stuff (and to a
lesser extent, the 'water-cooler' discussions at work) has made me sad
and cross. I just find it unpalatable to have all these people making
money out of her cancer, it's a sick kind of voyeurism and I'm sad that
we live in the sort of society that this is to be expected. Then
there's the fact she's supposedly doing it all to give her kids money
to live on. Fair play on one hand, but.. it's not exactly 'selfless',
giving money to your kids - in some ways it is selfish.
14. It's just odd - thousands of people die of
cancer every year, and there isn't this fuss. Quite a few of celebs die
every year of cancer, and there isn't this fuss. I can't help thinking
that far far far better could be done on the back of all this energy by
giving money and attention to cancer research, not some PR people and
the kids of someone who should have made enough money to care for them
already had she not pissed a lot of it away.
15. Tomorrow's footy fixtures include Fulham v
West Brom, Liverpool v Man City, and Newcastle v Everton. Additionally,
Wolves are playing Cardiff here in the West Midlands, seeing if they
can take advantage of both Reading and Birmingham losing today in the
Championship. I wonder if there'll be a helicopter and a load of police
about, like is usual?
16. 'Heavenly Creatures' in tv again as I type
this. I mean, it's a good film, and it has happy associated memories
w.r.t. a couple of times before when I watched it with girlfriends
n'that, but it must be in the top ten of films that I don't own but
have seen a fuckload of times. Why are some films shown by TV
schedulers incredibly often, and some very rarely? I mean.. does it
cost more for some films? Do TV stations own copy/rights for certain
films, but not others?
17. Perhaps the BBC is under the thrall of Christian influences, in that it shows 'Heavenly Creatures' so often in order to remind us of the (based on a true story) fact that lesbians are all murderers? Or maybe just Kiwi ones. No, it was partially the English girl too. We can't blame the Antipodean strain for matricide. Must be the sapphic lusts which cause desire to smack your mother over the head with a brick.
18. Robert Webb doing the flashdance dance
(complete with wig and leotard) on 'Let's Dance For Comic Relief' this
evening was spectacular. Not just for the comic nature, but he did pull
off some pretty ace moves. Considering that Jennifer Beals had two or
three body doubles for the scene in 'Flashdance' he was tributing,
'cause she couldn't pull them off, 'twas damned good.
