New job at the Folies Bergère

Sunday, Apr. 12, 2009 - 21:56

I've relatively little to say about today - it was similar to yesterday in that following a late-ish night, I stayed in bed a little while, then split the day between music, listening to football commentary, watching bits and bobs (mostly bobs) on TV, and reading my book.

My book ('Broken Skin' by Stuart MacBride) continues to be quite entertaining, though there is an extent to which I am feeling it's gone on a bit. I'm not sure whether it's fair to blame the book for being quite thick (I chose it after all!) and/or if it's slow moving.. or whether it's more accurate to say that I've dipped in and out of it somewhat in the past week, hence it seems to have taken forever to read.

Thinking about how much time I spent in the Orkney Islands as a child, I kinda took some of the attractions of the islands for granted. Looking at it as an informed adult, the archaeological richness of the area is astonishing, and - despite visiting all of the sights and liking them (and despite having a fairly respectful view on them, even as a child) - I never really understood just how important the historical context is.

I remember going to Carnac as well once, but that was a very very hot day and I can't have been any older than seven or eight. Looks pretty spectacular from articles and photgraphs of it, though.

Reading about some stuff last night online, including various interesting bits and bobs. Somewhat creepy (but probably explicable when one considers the clouded judgement of hypothermia sufferers, and the numerous cover-ups in the USSR) was The Dyatlov Pass Incident, and somewhat gory was The Byford Dolphin Diving Bell Accident. The idea of a diver exploding and then having his remains squirted through a small opening.. yuck!

Also read a bit about The Ramstein Air disaster, which is a bit scary n'all (obviously). I used to go to a few air shows when I was a kid - makes you think about the danger that's just a small miscalculation away.

I feel a bit sheepish though, in that I misinterpreted the lyrics of the song by Rammstein, not understanding what it was about. Bit cringeworthy in that all I could pick was something about flesh in the air :-(

There seems to be quite a lot of 'em - fatal accidents at airshows. None, thankfully, as bad as Skynyliv, which I saw a harrowing YouTube video about this afternoon.

Anyhow.. not to be morbid. Cheer the fuck up, Joisty Monkey Boykin! You're not lying in pieces on a runway, are you? So be kinda thankful about that.. mmm okay?

Aston Villa came from 2-0 and 3-1 down against Everton to draw 3-3, in a game that The Toffees will be gutted about not getting more from. Moyes' men dominated the game, all things considered. Elsewhere, Fulham staged a second half come back to beat Manchester City 3-1 at Eastlands. City really are pretty shite, despite all that money :-)

LISTENING TO:- put on a couple of CDs from them I got from the USA earlier. A folky one was unremarkable, except for the Tift Merritt song towards the end, and a Stabbing Westward one was exactly as expected.

Okay. It's ten p.m. I've got fuckadoodle all in the freaking house to eat - well, unless you count the cupboard full of 'ingredients' in the kitchen. But that's so different.. so little of it can be eaten straight away!!
